WonderCon recap

I know, I know, I’m behind but this girl just started working again!

Anyway, WonderCon. We ended up going both Saturday and Sunday because there were two panels on Sunday that looked like fun. Saturday was basically movie themed – there were big panels for the upcoming Watchmen, Star Trek, and Terminator movies. Sunday was more television oriented with panels from Chuck and Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Saturday definitely had the best costumes (see the Bumblebee costume above). Sunday was less humid and easier to move around.

Some random thoughts about the show:

* Adam Baldwin is handsome and funny.

* I want to have beers with the whole cast of Chuck. (And if you’re not watching this show, you should check it out.)

* Watchmen looks incredibly faithful to the book.

* Shirley Manson, lead singer of Garbage, is super cute.

* McG, the director of Terminator Salvation, swears like a pirate.

* There weren’t as many Rorshach costumes as I’d feared.

* Adam West still rocks.

* But I didn’t see Carrie Fischer or Mark Hamill.

* And San Francisco still rules. See graffiti below:

Bulemic dog

If you can’t read it, it says “Is your dog bulemic? Here are some signs: 1. Vomiting 2. Eating grass” It’s hilarious.

Ok, my working self is sleepy. Logging off to watch some TV!

Cate Blanchett makes everything better

Long, long ago I posted a quick article that Ridley Scott was working with Russell Crowe on a new Robin Hood film called Nottingham. And Sienna Miller was slated to play Marian. Sienna’s ok but I just thought she couldn’t quite stack up to Russell Crowe. And then there was a lot of drama around the production – rumors that Crowe was way overweight and was unwilling to work out, and that he and Ridley were fighting. And then recently word came that Sienna Miller was let go from the film altogether. And the rumors further say that it was creepy and gross seeing young, pretty Sienna making out with sloppy, heavy, Russell. But NOW word comes that the awesomely awesome Cate Blanchett is in talks to replace her. And THAT, my friends, is a movie I’d see opening weekend. Though, to be honest, I’d probably watch “Cate Reads the Phonebook: The MOVIE!” if such a thing existed. I do like my strong British Aussie actresses.

“What the f*@k was that?”

In July my husband took me to see a show I’d read about and was dying to see – Evil Dead the Musical. Well, the Willows Theatre Company in Martinez, California decided to remount the production, bigger and better than ever! We have a friend who’s a huge Evil Dead fan and who wasn’t here last time around so our gift to him was a night in Martinez, and a copy of the soundtrack.

Strike a pose

Still raunchy, still bloody, still punny, with some new stuff. And still mixed drinks that will knock you on your ass (ask our friend). If you’re in the Bay Area I HIGHLY recommend heading to Martinez for a night – a good time will be had by all.

And I got better pictures this time so check out my Flickr set.

Oh Axl

Remember the Dr. Pepper offer for G’N’R fans last Sunday? There’s a twist. Not cool man, not cool.

Los Angeles (E! Online) – All is fair in Chinese Democracy, except when the citizens are denied the opportunity to drink what the Dr ordered.

Axl Rose, wholely mum when Dr Pepper announced that it would bestow a free 20-ounce bottle on all comers when Guns N’ Roses’ years-in-the-making album finally dropped, is taking the company to task via his attorney after learning that not all customers were served.

The soft-drink behemoth had arranged to bestow online coupons to any thirsty freebie-seeker who visited its website on Nov. 23, but the site crashed due to…well, high traffic brought on by people’s insatiable desire for free stuff.

The promotion was extended for another day, but the site was reportedly unreachable for most of it.
And despite what surely is Rose’s sympathy for those who have trouble meeting customer demand, Guns N’ Roses’ lawyer is calling the attention-getting ploy an “unmitigated disaster which defrauded customers.”

In a letter to Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc, Beverly Hills-based Alan Gutman demanded that the company extend the promotion and place full-page apologies in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and USA Today.

Calling the campaign an “exploitation of my clients’ legendary reputation and their eagerly awaited album, Gutman wrote that “mocking undertones” in the Dr Pepper promotion made for a “raw and damaging commercial exploitation of our clients’ rights,” which was then made even worse by the “shoddy execution of your disingenuous giveaway offer.”

Oh, and the band would like some money now, too.

Threatening further legal action if no reparations are made, Gutman requests “appropriate payment…for the unauthorized use and abuse of their publicity and intellectual property rights.”

Dr Pepper declined to comment on Guns N’ Roses’ version of events.

WAAAH.

Dr. Pepper, FTW!

A long, long time ago I mentioned on this blog that Dr. Pepper was encouraging Axl Rose to hurry the heck up and release the new Guns ‘N’ Roses album, Chinese Democracy. Lo and behold, there’s an ACTUAL RELEASE DATE for the album – the single’s even playing on the radio I hear! What?! This mythical album is real?! After 13 years?!

Anyway, seems like Dr. Pepper has decided to make good on its offer. Want some free Dr. Pepper? Here’s how to claim yours, thanks to Dr. Pepper and G’N’R!

Those who want to claim a free soda can go to the Dr. Pepper website on November 23, enter some personal information and get a coupon for one 20-ounce drink that should arrive within the following 4 to 6 weeks. (The offer strangely said no free soda for former GNR members Slash and Buckethead.) The freebies expire in February 2009.

Now let’s just hope that the album was worth the wait… (you can pre-order it today on iTunes!)

The fat lady has sung

A few months ago I mentioned that there was an operatic version of Brokeback Mountain in the works. Variety announced this weekend that the production has been cancelled. It seems that the artistic director and general manager of the opera house commissioning the work has suddenly departed and, as a result, the opera has been cancelled. Frankly, I couldn’t wrap my brain around that film as an opera.

However, there is something totally AWESOME coming to London’s West End, and that’s a live version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. As a stage musical. Why does London get all the really good theatre??

Bigfoot update

A quick follow up to Friday’s Bigfoot post. General consensus seems to be: hoax!

Blog buddy (and apparantly near neighbor) Weirdgirl crashed the press conference and has a great write up on her blog.

Other reports on the press conference:

Wired

CNN

San Jose Mercury News – Part 1 and Part 2

SF Gate – The article that made me giggle and the more serious article

By the way, the fellows who discovered the Bigfoot have since started offering weekend search expeditions in Georgia for $499. Hmm…

Lost Boys 2: Electric Boogaloo

I mentioned before that there’s a Lost Boys 2 movie coming out in 2008. Earlier this week, Corey Feldman premiered the Lost Boys 2 Trailer on MTV’s website. He’s looking EXACTLY the same these days – maybe HE is a vampire? Anyway, go to the MTV site for the trailer and some clips with Feldman talking about the film. No sign of Corey Haim in the trailer, though I’ve read elsewhere that he does make an appearance in the film.
