FOUND: The “God Particle”

The other day some Fermilab scientists stated they were on their way toward finding the legendary Higgs bosun particle. Today some brains at CERN announced that they have FOUND the bosun.

The Higgs theory explains how particles clumped together to form stars, planets and life itself. Without the Higgs boson, the universe would have remained a formless soup of particles shooting around at the speed of light, the theory goes.

It is the last undiscovered piece of the Standard Model that describes the fundamental make-up of the universe. The model is for physicists what the theory of evolution is for biologists.

What scientists do not yet know from the latest findings is whether the particle they have discovered is the Higgs boson as exactly described by the Standard Model. It could be a variant of the Higgs idea or an entirely new subatomic particle that could force a rethink on the fundamental structure of matter.

The last two possibilities are, in scientific terms, even more exciting.

Crazy amazing. Was I the only one thinking “Man, Sheldon Cooper is gonna be EXCITED next season” or were you thinking it too?

  1. Without the Higgs boson, physicists have no way to explain how the universe — stars, galaxies, us — can exist. The boson is a particle, like a quark or an electron, but this is really a component of a force field known as the Higgs field. It’s like a universal stickiness that all things feel. A photon is a good analogy, says Paul Padley, a particle physicist at Rice University. It’s a light particle, but it also carries the electromagnetic force. The Higgs boson is a similar force carrier. According to theory, every other particle, every little quark and lepton, interacts with this sticky field; this interaction gives them their mass. Mass allows the particles to interact with each other, combining into atoms and molecules and stars and us.

  2. There are some very interesting ‘new theories’ postulated by a very small clique of scientists that suggest that ‘particles’ are just tiny ‘vibrations’ of spacetime and that the notion of solid particles are a mere illusion. Everything is therefore built out of space alone. These tiny space vibrations (in/out waves as they are known) have EXACTLY the same properties as the electron does, it would therefore follow that all other observed ‘particles’ can be built out of electrons, this includes gravity also. Google Gabriel Lafreniere for an in depth tour of this current theory. Certainly challenges the standard model and has a fresh and intriguing argument. It would explain why they are having trouble finding a particle that doesn’t need to exist.
